I’ve been listening to a live worship CD a lot lately. It was a freebie, and I figured I’d give it a listen, as I’ve been wanting to find some fresh songs (or at least some fresh takes on old songs). Sometimes, the artist who records a good song makes me not like what is a very good song. I need to be able to get past the performance and into the heart of the song…
Rambling. Sorry. Point is, I’ve re-discovered a few songs that I’ve decided I now like.
One of the things this group does is read appropriate/related scriptures in between songs. I like that. The songs might be based upon scripture, but scripture IS scripture. Well, my mind was wandering a bit, and this is what I heard in my brain while driving home from work last night (beginning in Revelation 4):
Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. Before the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits of God. They looked and they saw him step in on the mat. They looked and they saw him – the Cat in the Hat.
This was when I knew I needed a vacation. Or at least a break from children’s books.
That is very funny.
classic.
Forgive a long comment but a while back I translated Revelation into Dr. Seuss:
Gather ‘round, get some religion,
A while back I had a vision.
At first I stood there all alone,
Then I gaped before a throne.
The throne was great and around were more,
Just how many? Twenty-four!
There strode creatures–calf, lion, eagle, man,
What’s going on? Is there a plan?
“Please tell me, what are your deals?”
One held ahigh the seven seals.
He looked at me, the truth was spoken,
Before I knew, the first seal was broken.
Pestilence came with great assurance,
You’d better have some health insurance.
The second broke and up rode War,
Famine was next; boy, he was sore.
Who’s that following upon that pale horse?
Don’t you know? It’s Death, of course.
Things were grim, you’d better bet,
There’s nothing like this dread quartet.
No place to run, no place to hide,
When they take that final ride.
Souls were cast down in the mud,
The sun went black, the moon to blood.
At last the seventh seal was broke,
All went quiet, I thought I’d croak.
The trumpets blew– hail and fire,
Falling stars, it was all so dire.
A burning mountain from the sky did fell,
A hole opened up, going straight to Hell.
Out poured locust with the face of men,
Like the Plagues of Eygpt all over again.
Next came a blast and I should have known,
The last trump had just been blown.
Before a dragon, a woman gave birth,
The struggle was the last of earth.
She and her babe turned tail and fled,
In hot pursuit by this dragon red.
And then when I thought I’d seen it all,
What happened next made my skin crawl.
As thunder ripped the sky to shreds,
And I met the Beast with seven heads.
On each head grew seven horns,
Upon which seven crowns were borne.
Crowns and horns and heads– oh my!
How many men, I pray, won’t die?
The answer– this I learned for sure–
One thousand times 144.
The Beast was joined by one such other,
Don’t know the name but he’s one bad mother,
I hear his number is 6-6-6,
He’s got the dough to wow the chicks.
Upon hands and heads his mark will tell,
Who could buy and who could sell.
He ruled the lands with iron fist,
The wicked blessed, the good were dissed.
Then came the harvest of the earth,
The Beast grew bold with joy and mirth
But Angels of Death puffed up with rage,
They let loose seven deadly plagues.
The sea turned glass, the earth was blighted,
And now, for once, Beast was not delighted.
For came the end of him and man,
Into the fire, out of the pan.
The wicked sang their lamentations,
T’was destruction for the Pagan Nations.
In Babylon, a whore sans shames,
Was tattooed with unholy names.
But despite all her sluttish tricks,
Babylon’s blood and the rain did mix.
The wicked weep while the balance swings,
For there arrived the King of Kings.
He slew the Beast and his armies foul,
Evil should have tossed in the towel.
Glory was spread on land and sea,
Twas 1000 years of victory.
The wicked learned just who slew ’em,
The architects of New Jerusalem.
There was created a new earth and sky,
The saint will sing, the angels fly.
For my word is true, you’d better bet,
It simply hasn’t happened yet.
For when this occurs, if ye be good,
You’ll be rewarded as ye should.
But men who hide their many shames,
Will be cast down to the lake of flames.
All that is evil will then be gone.
This they showed me, yes, me John.
So go do good; do all things well,
Refrain from sin or burn in Hell.
